This is the story of college freshman Kanji Sasahara and his fellow members of the college club he joins, The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture (aka Genshiken), as he goes shopping for doujinshi, attends conventions and slowly but surely makes his way down the road to fandom.

Hannah's comments: Finally I have seen the first season of Genshiken. I really don´t know why it took so long to watch this. I mean, since I am more or less an animefan it should be very interesting to see how a series about otakus is. This is the first season (12 chapters). The animé Genshiken follows the manga quite well, though, it goes quite fast through the story and a feeling that the series leads over the manga later on. Time will show. So what do I think about it? Much laughing of course and also some laughing at the habits they have. Some thoughts and behaviours can surely be put on me. It is fun to watch small animé-episodes in Genshiken and animéfestivals or mangafestivals. Huge ones!! Not so much to say about the drawings, like in manga, maybe the faceimpressions are better here, since it might is easier to do in filming than just drawings. Anyhow, funny, a bit clumsiness and typical guytalks with animé and mangathought laying in the background of each Otaku´s heads (breasts, sexual fantasies) and girlotaku´s talk, ("how do I look?", "no I can´t put that on" ...) Definitely a worth watching animé which I will follow to its end - watching the OVA and season 2.
