On the final days of World War II, 14-year-old Seita and his four-year-old sister Setsuko are orphaned after their mother is killed during an air-raid by American forces in Kobe, Japan. After having a falling-out with their aunt, they move into an abandoned bomb shelter. With no surviving relatives and their emergency funds and rations depleted, Seita and Setsuko must struggle to survive their hardships as well as those of their country, which is on the losing end of the war.
Hannah's comments: One of the animés which seems to be classic, a film you more or less should see, if you want to get familiar with animé. Finally I took some time to watch it. A very sad story, a warning to you who is very sensible, you wonīt have a dry eye after this film. Soft and smooth drawings, nice shadows and landscape. Music good, it really feels you are in a middlie of a war. Though, what I didnīt like, were the animations of the people, especially the faces. Just in the middle of story I relized that it is Seita who tells the whole story. Story itself, well, I didnīt like it too much. I canīt tell why, maybe I had the feeling the film went to slow, it didnīt happen so much after all. If I shall draw a hard line, the story is only about war and loneliness. I think Grave of the fireflies is a film I only see once.
